What To Do If Water Is Coming Out of Your Water Heater's Top

A water heater is an indispensable appliance in the house, which is why you should ensure it is functioning correctly. You should schedule regular inspections with residential plumbers to confirm it is in good condition.

Tips while you wait for the residential plumbers to arrive.

If your water heater’s top is leaking, it could be because of any one of the three connections at the top. One of the following may be the cause of the leak:

  1. The connection that supplies hot water
  2. The connection that supplies cold water
  3. The connection that relieves the heater of pressure

You can try and resolve the issue by tightening the problematic connection. All you need is a wrench. This will remedy the problem immediately. Here are the steps you should follow to do it right:

  1. Dry the top of your water heater with paper towels
  2. When it’s scorched, note where the water is leaking from
  3. When it starts leaking, turn off the power source to prevent any electrical problems

If you use a gas water heater, switch off the gas supply. The gas valve is situated behind the water heater. You will find it at the end of the gas supply cable. Turn the valve in the clockwise direction. If you are dealing with an electric water heater, go to your home’s circuit box and turn off the breaker switch.

If water was leaking from the pressure relief valve, the chances are that the valve is spoiled or an accumulation of debris prevents it from functioning correctly. To address this problem, follow these directions.

  1. Place a bowl under the overflow tube.
  2. Remove the tab on the pressure relief valve so that it’s pointed straight out. The valve will open and release any debris inside.
  3. If, after doing this, the valve is still leaking, you have no option but to replace it.
