Of all the plumbing issues that a homeowner must face, there can be few more distressing than an overflowing toilet. In most cases, a toilet overflow can be handled right on the spot. Sometimes, however, homeowners will need to call residential plumbers.
If you’re faced with an overflowing toilet, here are a few pointers on how to handle it till the plumber arrives.
Turn off the water valve on the wall behind the toilet
Turning off the water flow to the toilet will stop the overflowing water. If the valve is stuck or you can’t find it, remove the tank lid and lift the float ball to stop the water from running. You may need to get someone else in the house to turn off the main water supply valve. (Before there is an emergency, familiarize yourself with the water valves and how to turn them off.)
Are you dealing with sewage backup?
If overflow continues when the main valve is off, it’s possible sewage backup is occurring. This will require a call to a plumber.
Prep to fix the clog
If your toilet is merely clogged and you don’t have a sewage backup, find your plunger. Keep a plunger nearby with a flange that will reach into the toilet’s drain hole to form a tight seal. Before starting work, put on rubber gloves. Empty a few inches of water from the toilet bowl into a bucket, so there’s less likelihood of sloshing water onto the floor during plunging. Throw a few old towels on the floor to sop up the water.
Plunge the clog
Insert the flange into the toilet drain hole. Plunge vigorously for up to 20 seconds to clear the clog, then flush.
Deal with a difficult clog
For more difficult clogs, you may need to use a drain snake, which can reach deeper into the hole and hook onto the clog material, so it pulls out. However, if you don’t own a drain snake or are not sure what you’re doing, it’s better to call a plumber.
